Truckee Thursdays summer street fair offers live music, food, craft beer, arts and crafts booths, children’s activities and… a chance to get a signed copy of Death in Nostalgia City. I will be signing books from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, at the Bookshelf bookstore’s booth.

Mystery flash fiction story

 Thoughtful Neighbor

 Max stared at himself in the bathroom mirror then blew his nose.

“Max, would you check on the neighbors again?” his wife said. “I’m worried. Duane and Jenny’s grass is longer than before you mowed it last week.”

“Okay. I’m sure they’re fine.”

An hour later, Max had mowed the neighbors’ yard and taken care of their mail.

Max hated to have hocked Jenny’s jewelry. Sadly, Duane’s coin collection was next. Max’s need for coke was now an insatiable hunger.

Duane and Jenny never complained. They were still sitting on the couch, the blood long-since dried around the bullet holes.
